What is Animal Futures: The Big Conversation?

It takes everyone to create a better world for every animal. Animal Futures: The Big Conversation is a chance to share your vision of a better world for every kind, and explore how we can create it together.

We’re inviting everyone across England and Wales to share their views on how we treat animals now, and what we need to change to improve their lives in the future. You can join the conversation via our online platform between 23 January and 21 February.

Animal Futures: The Big Conversation will explore four key themes:

  • How we use animals (e.g. in sport, entertainment and as pets)
  • Animals and technology
  • Farmed animals and food
  • Animals in the wild
  • Your online responses will inform more in-depth discussions by a citizens' assembly in mid 2025, representing different views across England and Wales.

At the end of the project, we’ll publish a report and use these outcomes to drive our campaigning work, urge the Government to take action and rally everyone to build a better world for every animal – one where they’re treated with kindness and respect.

Host a Conversation for Animals

It’ll take all of us to create a better world for animals. Hosting a Conversation for Animals is a great place to start. Whether it’s at your monthly book club, over a coffee or after a religious service, get together for a chat about the world you want to see for animals. Then share your thoughts with us via our online form by 6 April 2025. Our toolkit contains all the information you need to run the conversation.

The next generation

Involve the young people in your life

We would love to include young people’s experiences and ideas in Animal Futures: The Big Conversation. While our online platform is for over 18s only, you can use the educational ethics activities (linked to on this page) to explore these topics with the young people in your life. Any thoughts they share by 6 April 2025, through the activity submission forms, will be included in our analysis.

Ethics of Pet Ownership

Discuss people’s views on extreme breeding, what defines a ‘pet,’ and whether owning one should require a license.

Ethics of Farming

Discuss the key differences between lower welfare and higher welfare farming practices, and encourage others to make informed choices as responsible consumers.

Ethics involving Wildlife

Discuss people’s views on managing wildlife, the acceptability of keeping wild animals in captivity, and what kind of future we should create for wildlife and their habitats.
