Vegetarianism and veganism

The number of farm animal being reared needs to be significantly reduced, and the adoption of vegan and vegetarian lifestyles can help towards this. The vast majority of people currently chose to consume animal products, so we believe in working to achieve the highest possible standards for farm animal welfare possible. We implement a number of tools to achieve this.

We work with governments, consumers, retailers, food businesses, farmers and other key stakeholders to achieve positive change for farm animals, but there's still so much to do. You can help improve the welfare of farm animals by supporting our work.

Farm animal welfare standards

We develop welfare standards for each of the major farm animal species, which cover every aspect of the their lives. The standards are constantly updated and set at the limit of what is achievable, in terms of animal husbandry and commercial viability, and aim to deliver improved animal welfare above and beyond 'standard' or typical practice. The standards are applied through our farm assurance scheme, RSPCA Assured, as well as being used by a wide variety of other bodies and individuals in the UK and beyond.

RSPCA Assured

For those that chose to consume animal products, we encourage them to select 'higher welfare' products, such as RSPCA Assured labelled food, which is an assurance that the rearing, transportation and slaughter of the animal involved in producing the food have been inspected to our strict welfare standards.

Together, we make a difference
