FREE CAT MICROCHIPPING WEEKEND DUE TO THE DANGERS OF CAT COLLARS

An RSPCA Animal Collection Officer was called to a cat (now known as Nugget) that had become injured after getting her leg stuck through her collar. She was taken to a local vet, where she was found to have deep wounds. She has now been treated and is now being rehabilitated at the RSPCA Hull & East Riding Branch. This type of injury takes a long time to recover from and could have been avoided if her owner had used a snap collar.

Cats are not legally required to wear collars. However, some owners have various reasons for wanting their cat to wear one e.g. to attach an identity tag or a bell. Badly designed or ill-fitting collars can be dangerous and can cause injury.

If you choose to have your cat wear a collar, it must have a quick-release safety buckle that snaps open when pressure is

applied. You can buy safety buckle cat collars from the RSPCA Animal Centre based on Clough Road.

FREE CAT MICROCHIPPING WEEKEND 12 - 13 AUGUST 2017

The RSPCA Hull & East Riding Branch are hosting a Free Cat Microchipping Event on 12 - 13 August. No appointment is necessary and you just need to pop along between 10.00am - 1.00pm or 2.00pm - 3.30pm with your cat in a secure basket and proof of identity (i.e. a utility bill with your name & address on) Cats must be over 8 weeks of age and in good condition.

How it works

A tiny microchip is quickly and simply inserted under the animal's skin towards the base of the neck area. This gives the pet their own unique code. The microchip can be scanned and matched to the owner's contact details, which are kept on a database that can then be accessed by veterinary surgeons, pet welfare organisations and microchip professionals.

Thousands of pets are lost every year and many are never reunited with their owners microchipping can help to change that. While collars and tags can get caught or removed microchipping identifies your pet permanently and effectively.

Microchipping is only effective if you keep your details up to date. If you move house or change your telephone number you must make sure that you tell the database you are registered with so that they have your up-to-date contact details.
