Adoptober - Georgie’s story

Our sweet Georgie was brought in by her original owner, who felt they could no longer give her the proper care she needed.

Surrendering a pet can be an immensely difficult decision to make. There are feelings of guilt and disappointment, especially if you’ve had to make the decision with others involved. But as the UK’s largest animal welfare charity, we think it’s one of the bravest decisions to make.

The animals have a second chance to find a home that can spend the time, money and attention on them, and you and your family are relieved of a responsibility that was bringing you down. It’s better for everyone.

When it comes to finding a new pet, we believe adoption is the best way forward. It’s cost effective, secure and you’ll be offering a home to a pet in need.

Georgie was adopted by a couple at the age or 17 months, in June. This is the story of how it went.

Pre-adoption

“We found Georgie on the RSPCA website, and she immediately got us by the heartstrings. So, despite a long distance to drive, an adoption form was quickly sent. The branch quickly responded to our email and then a few phone calls followed.

Sharon and the team were so good at arranging things for us, providing information and details on the need-to-knows, and being willing for us to meet and (hopefully) bring Georgie home with us. The turn-around time was perhaps a week and a half (just enough time to get everything prepared for our new furry arrival).

After two and a half hours of driving, I arrived as a bundle of nerves and excitement to meet Georgie. I really hoped she’d like me, and that I would like her, too – although had a good feeling about her. Our first encounter was so heart-warming, Georgie was inquisitive, playful, sassy, and friendly, and she was perfect! After a short form and final questions, Georgie was ready to come back to her new home.

So, with a full heart me and my new feline friend were on our way. She was a little bit of an anxious and vocal passenger in the car for a while, and then she became very sleepy.

Settling in

Georgie’s first stepping-stone was in our spare room, she had all of her essentials (and of course a few catnip toys) and took some time sniffing and surveying her new sanctuary.  We spent lots of time in there talking to her, giving her cuddles, and playing with a feather toy! It didn’t take too long until she was confident, comfy, and ready to explore the rest of the house.

Exploring the house

Once again, Georgie’s inquisition led to extensive sniffing of her bigger, more exciting environment, and always with the option to escape back to her familiar, safe room! After a few days, and a few more cuddles, this is when Georgie’s love of climbing and playing began to shine through. A character emerged and we fell completely in love with her.

After a couple of months at home, Georgie was ready to explore, woah! She’s establishing her territory more and more every day, loves flopping and rolling on the patio in the sun, sitting on fences, and chasing flying bugs, of course.” Ali

Adoptober – Adopt don’t shop!

We think you’ll agree that’s the perfect happy ending for everyone, especially Georgie! October is the month we dub ‘Adoptober’, and we encourage you to please, please consider adopting not shopping for your next pet.

We update our ‘Find a Pet’ pages on a regular basis, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for, please get in touch as we often have pets waiting in the wings, but also know who’s looking for love in other areas.
