Lost or Found an animal?
Lost
If you have lost a pet or found an uninjured, stray, domestic animal, we recommend posting the information on www.petsreunited.com.
Any animals collected by an Inspector without a microchip or an identifiable owner will be placed on this website. This provides a searchable network of stray animals dealt with by the RSPCA.
www.petsreunited.com is free for those reporting a found animal. Anyone wishing to log a lost pet is asked for a fee of £10+VAT to use the service for 12 months. This includes posting details of the lost pet online and social media, and the facility to create your own 'lost pet' poster, as well as giving access to the database of found pets.
We highly recommend microchipping animals as one of the best ways of being reunited with a pet if it goes missing. It is now law for all dogs and horses to be microchipped. The microchipping of cats is currently being debated in Parliament so it is hoped this will soon follow.
Pets at Home also have a chargable service called Find My VIP helping to reunite lost dogs with their owners
If you have lost your pet you may also wish to try the following options:
- Telephone local Veterinary Surgeries to see if your pet has been taken in
- Ask neighbours to check their sheds and outbuildings
- Contact the microchip company of your pet to notify them so you are notified when your pet is found
- Notify Cats Protection – call 03000 121212 to find your local branch
- Contact your local Council Animal Warden
- Check lost pet sites such as www.doglost.co.uk or www.petsreunited.com and register your pet's details
- Contact local rescue organisations to see if your pet has been handed in
- Tell local friends and family and advertise on lost animal sites via social media
- Make posters for your local community notice boards, veterinary surgeries and some pet stores that allow such advertisements
Found
Cats
If you find a healthy stray cat and are not sure if it has an owner, please pop a paper collar around its neck with your details asking the owner to call you. If no owner is identified please contact your nearest Cats Protection to see if they are able to rehome it. For more advice on what to do if you find a stray cat click here.
If you find an injured stray cat and are able to pop it in a basket, please take it to your nearest vet for treatment. If this is not possible, please call the national RSPCA Call Centre on 0300 1234 999 for Inspectorate assistance.
Dogs
If you find a healthy dog wondering the streets looking lost, please ask nearby if an owner can be identified. If an owner is not found, please call your nearest Council Dog Warden who will come and collect the animal and check for a microchip to reunite it with its owner.
Birds
If you find a baby bird in your garden please monitor it. It is highly likely that its parents are nearby and are teaching it how to fly. If after two hours the bird has not flown away and the parents are not visible please pop the bird into a ventilated cardboard box and contact your nearest wildlife centre or vet. If neither are available, please call the RSPCA National Call Centre on 0300 1234 999 for Inspectorate assistance. For more information on the difference between fledglings and nestlings click here.
